� | An event entitled "Computers and Disability" will be held in Dungannon Leisure Centre on Friday the 15th of May 1998, from 10am until 6pm. The event is being organised by second year students, studying for the Advanced GNVQ in Information Technology at East Tyrone College of Further Education. ![]() Sometimes a disability appears to make computer use difficult or even impossible. The first barrier is often a lack of information about what resources and products are available for those with special needs, and what can be achieved through using them. The aim of this project is to show how computers, with the appropriate adaptive technology, can help people with special needs to:
Advice and information Professional consultants from the Warwick-based charity, The Computability Centre, will be on hand throughout the day to provide expert advice and information on all aspects of computing for people with special needs. The Computability Centre is a national charity dedicated to improving the lives of disabled people through the use of computers and associated technology. 'Hands on' experience As well as exhibitions, there will be an opportunity for some 'hands on' trials of a huge range of alternative and adaptive hardware and software supplied by a range of computer companies. Teleworking Representatives from Telework Ireland and Network Personnel Ltd. will be available to provide information on teleworking - a realistic way in which disabled people can make a meaningful contribution to the workplace. Training and Employment Representatives will be on hand from the Training and Employment Agency and Disability Action to offer advice and information on training and support available for the disabled. ![]() Organisations/companies attending the event include:
